About Us
Japanese Karate Academy is a traditional Japanese Martial arts dojo established by John Hileman, a Firefighter and Paramedic in the Johnson County area.
My goal is to instill the spirit and honor of traditional budo
and encourage every student to not only exceed their expectations,
but mine as well. Our style is based on the techniques and training of
Shindo-Jinen Ryu, Shotokan, Jujitsu, and Aikido,
but with self-defense adapted
to the unfortunate reality of today's society.
Though our focus is on self-defense, we also devote significant
time to conditioning and sport competition.
Welcome to
Japanese Karate Academy
As we finally start seeing consistently warmer temperatures and fewer (but not none) freeze advisories, we are looking forward to more playing outdoors, swimming, camping, and hopefully a winning season for the Royals!
It's not too late to start working on shedding that extra winter weight
and polish up your self-defense skills.
For the kiddos, we focus heavily on self-protection and anti-bullying concepts.
Several of our younger students have found that just the increased confidence they have gained was enough to get them out of potentially dangerous situations.
And for the adults, we have the new "adults-only" Street Defense class.
No uniforms or belts, no katas, no tests - just sweat, hard work,
and training from just about anywhere.
The more you sweat in training,
the less you bleed in combat!

Class Schedule

Ok, here's the weird thing with our schedule. I work full-time as a Paramedic.
Starting this April, I will be working 24-hr shifts with a day off in between.
That makes for a very irregular availability, which means our karate classes will
have to be scheduled according to that availability.
I will send out a calendar for each month showing the days I am able to teach.
Below is our April calendar, to give you an example.
